“We see it as our collective responsibility to do what we can to ensure that these beautiful underwater spaces will still be here for future generations to enjoy and explore.”

New Heaven Reef Conservation

The New Heaven Reef Conservation Program (NHRCP) is a marine research, protection, and restoration training program on the island of Koh Tao. Established in 2007, our program is a social enterprise organization that seeks to manage the marine resources of the island where we live, while concurrently educating and increasing the capacity of local stakeholders and visitors. To date, we have trained thousands of students in our 2-4 week programs, giving them the skills needed to assist on our on-going marine conservation projects, other projects worldwide, or to start their own marine conservation programs where none currently exist.

Program

Our coral reef conservation program takes a holistic approach, integrating both scientific research and a wide range of proactive measures to attempt to preserve these precious ecosystems. At our program, participants are introduced first to a course in coral reef ecology before then conducting reef surveys to give them hands-on knowledge of the intricacies and relationships at work in these marine ecosystems. Next, they move on to a variety of proactive and restorative techniques such as mooring buoy installations, coral nurseries, artificial reef building, giant clam nurseries, sea turtle nurseries, clean-ups, and much more. Only by taking a holistic approach that encompasses a wide range of actions do we feel that we can create an effective means of resource management.

Collaboration

Our program has also worked with local and international universities, government groups such as the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, and NGO’s to increase the impact our program has on the natural environments of Thailand. We have published over 15 peer-reviewed scientific papers, as well as dozens of papers from our student’s thesis projects. Our program will continue to work with local communities and groups across Thailand to further increase the positive impacts that we can have on the environment in order to sustain our local economies, communities, and way of life.
