“To conserve the integrity and functionality of the Yucatan Peninsula’s ecosystems, promoting its communities socioeconomic development and influencing in its cultural and environmental policies, based on science.”
Amigos de Sian Ka’an
Amigos de Sian Ka’an A.C. (ASK) is a Mexican NGO founded with the original objective of preserving the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, an UNESCO’s World Heritage Site in Quintana Roo, Mexico. Over time, ASK expanded its work scope beyond Sian Ka’an and Quintana Roo, encompassing the Yucatan Peninsula, with the clear mission of conserving the integrity and functionality of the Peninsula’s ecosystems, promoting its communities socioeconomic development and influencing in its culture and environmental policies, based on science.
Over the years, ASK has been the only NGO in Mexico that has succeeded in promoting the establishment of 14 protected areas in the region, by the federal and state governments, which means the protection of more than 1’200,000 hectares of tropical forest, wetlands and marine environments that give life to many wild species, guaranteeing the productive activities of many communities. The creation of these protected areas has been based on state-of-the-art research developed by ASK, such as, the description and monitoring of 600 Km of the Mesoamerican Reef, the second largest on Earth. In alliance with the Austria Geological Survey. ASK has also explored 380 Km2 of the largest underground rivers in the world through electromagnetic aerial mapping, generating new paradigms on the geohydrology of the Yucatan Peninsula by describing the influence of karst structures on groundwater flows. These kind of high level information allows ASK to be an influential NGO contributing significantly in the design and implementation of policy instruments that complement the role of protected areas.
